The first line of defense in a recession for workers and their families
is our nation’s unemployment insurance program. The anticipated
severity of the economic downturn now facing employers and employees
alike will test the UI program after years of federal neglect.
Teachers are, by most any measure, inequitably distributed among
students. Poor students are far more likely than their wealthier
counterparts to be matched with teachers who have little experience,
graduated from less-selective colleges, and possess fewer credentials.
It is not surprising that inequities exist in the distribution of
teachers across the nation’s classrooms.
The Jackson County School Board and new superintendent Lee Miller have upheld the decision to not seek the termination of a teacher for the use of the N-word. Parents at Marianna Middle School reported an incident of Howard on Sept. 26 writing the word "CHANGE" on the board. According to reports, he then added his own definition to Barack Obama's campaign mantra: Come Help A (N-word) Get Elected.
An 11th Street building that sits minutes from where Martin Lee Anderson

New government figures show that almost 700,000 children went hungry in America at some point in 2007. That number was up more than 50 percent from the year before and reached its highest point since 1998. The

Monday, also shows that more than 36 million adults and children
struggled against hunger last year.
Do
we need further proof that greed is not the solution for a sound economy?
Do we need further proof that capitalism is foundering? Do we need
further proof that ignoring the poor is not the way to make the world
go round? That selfish accumulation of wealth is not the key to peace
of mind and a life worth living?
Prison companies are preparing for a wave of new business as the
downturn makes it difficult for officials to run their own jails. The Federal Bureau of Prisons and several state governments have sent
thousands of inmates in recent months to prisons and detention centers
run by Corrections Corp. of America, Geo Group
Inc. and other private operators, as a crackdown on illegal
immigration, a lengthening of mandatory sentences for certain crimes
and other factors have overcrowded many government facilities.
The National Public
Service Council To Abolish Private Prisons made a concerted effort when
choosing its name to erase any possibility of ambiguity regarding who
we are and our mission statement. It is our unwavering organizational
belief that as long as our government permits Private Prisons For
Profit to operate as legal businesses, the American Criminal Justice
System, in particular, will never have the capacity to develop -in
theory or otherwise- a credibility that the people of this great nation
can respect and feel morally comfortable with.
UVA History professor and civil rights luminary Julian Bond has announced that he won’t seek re-election as NAACP National Board Chairman. The NAACP website reports

as chairman until the organization’s centennial, in February of next
year.
